Public Sector Cadre report lists vacancies in education sector

Existing vacancies in institutions coming under the Education Ministry were revealed in the Public Sector Cadre Information report tabled in Parliament this week.

According to the report, there are 32,614 vacancies across all institutions coming under the ministry. This makes it the ministry with the second highest number of vacancies, behind the Ministry of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs.

The ministry has an approved total cadre of 10,664, but the actual number of staff is 10,031. The most vacancies at the ministry exist at the tertiary level. There are 182 approved cadre positions at this level, though the actual number is just 16, leaving a staggering number of 166 vacancies. There are also 66 vacancies at the senior level, with only 262 out of 328 positions filled as at June 30.

There are nearly 15,000 vacancies in national schools, according to the report.

The report also includes vacancies at university level. The stats reveal that the University of Ruhuna has 1,038 vacancies, while the University of Peradeniya has 851. The University of Kelaniya has
727 vacancies, and the University of Moratuwa has 703 vacancies. The University of Jaffna, meanwhile, has 648 vacancies and the Sabaragamuwa University has
501 vacancies.

The University of Vocational Technology meanwhile, is severely understaffed. Though its approved cadre stands at 1,554, the actual number of staff is just 348, leaving a deficit of 1,206. There are also 1,856 vacancies at the Department of Technical Education and Training and 1,238 vacancies at the National Colleges of Education.
