The Gateway Graduate School, the higher education and professional development arm of the Gateway Group, held its Convocation at the BMICH, Colombo, in the presence of a distinguished gathering of educators, administrators, and well-wishers.
Professor Upul Sonnadara, Dean of the Faculty of Science, University of Colombo, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. In his address, Professor Sonnadara underscored the importance of having well-qualified teachers in today’s education system. He emphasised that the nation’s progress depends on teachers who are not only professionally competent but also dedicated to nurturing the next generation with compassion, critical thinking, and adaptability. He commended the Gateway Graduate School for its commitment to strengthening teacher education and elevating professional standards in the sector.
Delivering the Welcome Address, Professor Ananda Jayawardena, Vice Chancellor, spoke about the essential attitudes and values teachers must cultivate to inspire their students and contribute meaningfully to the transformation of education. He highlighted the strong academic pathways available through Gateway Graduate School to Flinders University, Australia, for Degrees in Primary, Secondary, and Early Childhood Education. He also noted that Gateway Graduate School has been recognised as a degree-awarding institute, offering the Bachelor of Education (Honours) Degree. For the first time in Sri Lanka, a Master of Education from Flinders University is now being delivered offshore through Gateway Graduate School — a milestone development that enables Sri Lankan educators to pursue internationally recognised qualifications within their own country.
Dr. Harsha Alles, Chairman of the Gateway Group, in his closing address, spoke passionately about embracing teaching as a calling that shapes young minds and strengthens communities. He stressed the importance of retaining Sri Lanka’s skilled professionals, noting that true progress lies in investing knowledge and expertise back into the country rather than exporting talent abroad. Dr. Alles expressed his pride in Gateway’s efforts to create opportunities for aspiring educators through its locally delivered and internationally benchmarked qualifications.
Diplomates from the Pearson BTEC Diplomas in Teaching, Learning and Education Management and Early Childhood Education were conferred their awards at the ceremony. Among the high achievers recognised this year were Fathima Rifna Anas, awarded Overall Best Performer for the Pearson BTEC Higher National Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care, and Fathima Shafna Razik, honoured as Overall Best Performer for the Pearson SRF BTEC Level 4 Professional Diploma in Teaching and Learning.
The event celebrated the dedication and accomplishments of the diplomates, reflecting Gateway Graduate School’s continued mission to raise the standards of teacher education and contribute to the advancement of Sri Lanka’s education system.
