A herd of wild elephants that had strayed out of the Randenigala Wildlife Sanctuary caused damage to the Knandakepu Ulpatha Primary School in the Badulla District yesterday morning (November 1), police said.
According to the Kandaketiya Police, the herd of four elephants had entered the school premises from the rear boundary in search of food and had later forced their way out through the main gate, damaging school property in the process.
The elephants, believed to have spent only a short time within the school compound, had then proceeded towards the main road after breaking through the gate, police added.
Officers of the Department of Wildlife Conservation were called to the scene and subsequently drove the elephants back into the Randenigala Wildlife Sanctuary using firecrackers.
It was also reported that a banana cultivation located near the school had been destroyed by the same herd before the incident.
