Twenty officers of the Judicial Service Commission including a High Court judge, magistrates and district judges have been removed from their duties.
Of these seven have had their services terminated while the others have been interdicted or sent on compulsory retirement.
The HC judge in question is facing an inquiry before Supreme Court Justice Janaka de Silva. The termination of duties has been done following inquiries held into public complaints made against those in the judicial service.
Those found guilty of misdemeanors and are close to retirement age have been given the option of retiring from the service.
In the case of those facing serious charges such as corruption, charge sheets have been served and an inquiry held. If they are found guilty of an offence after the inquires, they are removed by the JSC which is chaired by Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena.
At present there are ten vacancies in the High Court while there are around 60 vacancies in the Magistrate and District court.
It has been decided that those found guilty of wrongdoing will no longer be kept in the JSC.
Some of the judicial officers summoned for inquiries had not appeared before the inquiring committees and had left the service without facing the inquiry.
It has also transpired that one magistrate had given a ruling in favour of her husband while there are allegations they have been partial towards certain lawyers.
Similarly those who are competent will be promoted irrespective of their seniority in the service.
