The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption has opened an investigation on the misuse of Mahapola scholarship funds.

The alleged misuse of funds is reported to have taken place during the period of former Trade Minister Nalin Fernando who is currently in jail after being convicted for corruption charges.

The Bribery Commission plans to record a statement from the former minister, however he had told the Commission officials that he would make a statement only after consulting his lawyers.

The Commission is however due to obtain a court order to record his statement.

According to the Mahapola Scholarship Trust Fund Act decisions regarding the funds should be taken in consultation with the Chairman of the Fund – a post held by the sitting Chief Justice at that time. However the decision had been taken without consulting him.

The investigation relates to the cancellation of a tender awarded to conduct the online lottery which had already been given to another company by the previous Trade Minister Bandula Gunawardena.
