Attorney General Parinda Ranasinghe has advised the Police to follow the procedures laid down by the law when carrying out investigations and arrests of suspects linked to drug related offences.

The directive was given when the IGP and several senior police officers were summoned by the AG amidst claims that suspects arrested in connection with drug related offences often go free due to shortcomings in the investigations.

The AG has relayed the advice to IGP Priyantha Weerasooriya, Director CID Shani Abeysekera, the Director of the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) and others in the bureau.

Solicitor General Viraj Dayaratne PC and Deputy Solicitor General Suharshi Herath and several others were present at the meeting. They informed the Police that instead of carrying out investigations on its own after arrests are made; they should consult with the AG’s Department for the necessary advice.

Failure to do so has resulted in instances where suspects arrested with 30 to 40 kilograms of narcotics have gone free due to shortcomings in handling the investigations.

The AG has said that investigations should be completed to a level where there is enough evidence to prove there are reasonable grounds for prosecution, without rushing to complete investigations to suit different agendas.
