President Anura Kumara Dissanayake vowed to eradicate the narcotics trade, the scourge of which is destroying the country’s economy and society, while schoolchildren and young people continue to fall victim to drugs.

“The drug trade has long been fostered with the support of politicians and certain state officials, but the government has now ended the era where criminals have political protection and act with impunity,” the President said, speaking at the launch of the anti-drug campaign A Nation United: Eradicating the Menace of Narcotic Drugs, held at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in Colombo. The President issued a warning to those serving in the police and other state institutions who have ties to criminal gangs, stating that such connections will no longer be tolerated.

He also said that a substantial allocation would be made in next week’s budget for the rehabilitation of those addicted to drugs and that a National Operations Centre would be established with the involvement of all relevant parties.

“The spread of dangerous drugs in the country has reached the level of a national catastrophe, and it has been observed that numerous crimes are linked to drug trafficking.
The government has recognised that the menace must be uprooted through an efficient decision-making mechanism and a nationwide programme with broad public participation,” he said.

Under this programme, the government aims to raise social awareness of the threat through a broad campaign, dismantle networks linked to drug trafficking, strengthen rehabilitation opportunities, and provide support for individuals seeking to overcome drug dependence.
