Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has enlisted two foreign coaches to its national men’s cricket team support staff, as part of a strategic effort to strengthen performance across formats. Julian Wood, a former English first-class cricketer and power-hitting specialist, and Rene Ferdinands, a former New Zealand first-class player, are expected to join the national setup.

The move comes in response to Sri Lanka’s inconsistent performances in recent months, though it is not directly linked to the Asia Cup exit. Following Sri Lanka’s 2-1 T20 series defeat to Bangladesh at home in July, SLC called for applications for batting, fielding, and spin bowling coaches.

While the national team has performed reasonably well in Tests and ODIs under an all-local coaching staff led by head coach Sanath Jayasuriya, results in T20 cricket have been less consistent. With the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup approaching, SLC has decided a fresh approach is necessary to enhance the team’s competitiveness in the high-octane format.

Julian Wood, who recently conducted a week-long training programme for Sri Lankan batters ahead of their Zimbabwe series, has now signed a one-year deal to oversee the batting departments of all national teams, effective October 1, 2025. Renowned for his innovative methods, Wood has developed a cricket-specific ‘Power Hitting’ programme, drawing on baseball principles to improve a batsman’s hitting power. His techniques, which utilise specially designed drills and training aids, have been in practice since 2011 and have contributed to successful T20 campaigns for teams including Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Middlesex, and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

Rene Ferdinands, based in Australia, is an expert in cricket biomechanics, specialising in the technical development of batting, fast bowling, spin bowling (including wrist-spin and finger-spin), and fielding. Contracted for two years from September 30, 2025, Ferdinands will focus on the men’s national team, overseeing training, match preparation, performance analysis, and player development.

The dual appointments represent a departure from Sri Lanka’s recent preference for an all-local coaching team. By integrating international expertise, SLC aims to address tactical gaps and cultivate a more aggressive, polished side capable of competing with the world’s best in T20 cricket.

Although applications were called for a fielding coach, no appointment has yet been made. Despite occasional lapses, the national team’s fielding has shown significant improvement under current coach Upul Chandana.
