The ICC Women’s World Cup encounter between Sri Lanka and Australia ended in disappointment yesterday, as persistent rain forced the game to be abandoned without a single ball being bowled at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

For Sri Lanka, the contest carried extra significance after their opening defeat to co-hosts India. The team had set its sights on producing a strong performance against the defending champions, hoping that home conditions might tilt the balance in their favour. However, steady showers from the afternoon left the outfield unplayable, and despite repeated inspections, the umpires had no choice but to call off the match at 5:30pm.

Both teams collected one point each from the abandoned fixture. Australia, who won their first match, moved to the top of the group with three points. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, now have one point from two outings, leaving them in fifth place and under pressure to secure a win to stay in contention for a semi-final spot.

The washout also meant fans were deprived of a much-anticipated contest between Sri Lanka’s spin attack and Australia’s powerful batting line-up.
Sri Lanka’s next assignment will be against England on next Saturday (11), again at the R. Premadasa Stadium.

Entry free at R. Premadasa ICS
Entry to the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo will be free of charge according to the organisers of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 with a policy of ‘first come, first served’ basis. The Colombo venue will host 11 matches out of the total of 31, and so far until yesterday two matches have been played with nine more games remaining to be played at the R. Premadasa Stadium.
