Ranil suggests holding 1000 meetings
View(s):Former President and United National Party Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday suggested the joint opposition to hold one thousand meetings across the country, as the opposition did in 1975 under the leadership of J.R. Jayewardene.
He was addressing the 79th party anniversary, for which invitations were sent to all opposition parties, including the Samagi Jana Balawegaya and the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna.
He said the 1000-meeting goal could be achieved by holding four or five meetings in each electorate and added that meetings should also be held even in the north.
“If one member of each party gets together with others and holds meetings, how many would come? See the power that would generate,” he elaborated.
Mr Wickeremesinghe stressed that all of them should continue meeting, as they held the meeting with other parties at the 79th Anniversary of the UNP.
He vowed not to stop the meetings and urged them not just to leave this meeting to become another expenditure. He stressed that the meetings should be relentlessly held.
Recalling Samagi Jana Balawegaya General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara’s call for unity at the opposition party leaders’ meeting, he urged all opposition parties to work together. “How that can be done can be later discussed among us,” he said.
