Police Chief Priyantha Weerasooriya has instructed his officers to take steps to accurately identify personnel assigned to VIP events in order to thwart attempts by criminals or radical elements to carry out unlawful acts while disguised in security force uniforms.

In an internal circular to senior officers this week, the IGP notes that considering current threats to VIP security, it is likely that a criminal or violent radical dressed in a uniform of the tri-forces, Sri Lanka Police, or other agencies could infiltrate events attended by VIPs to carry out a crime or an act that could threaten lives.

Therefore, it is essential to take steps to accurately identify those in security forces uniforms when they are assigned to essential duties such as security and traffic control at events attended by dignitaries, including the President, Prime Minister and Ministers, the circular stresses.

Accordingly, the IGP has emphasised that it is crucial to identify in advance officers who are to be assigned to duties at such events and to verify their credentials.

The circular also instructs that when issuing different coloured wristbands, badges, or other symbols to identify and differentiate officers in security zones during special duty occasions, these tasks must be carried out with greater attention than before.

The IGP reminds officers that, in light of recent events where a gunman disguised as a lawyer killed a suspect in a courtroom, this matter cannot be overlooked. As such, he has directed all officers to give this matter special attention and take all necessary measures to prevent any such incident from recurring.
