President Anura Kumara Dissnayake will address the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Wednesday, where he will reiterate Sri Lanka’s unwavering support for the inalienable right of the Palestinian people to statehood.

President Dissanayake, accompanied by Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath, will leave for New York on Monday to attend the UNGA’s 80th session, which is expected to be dominated by the Israel-Palestine conflict. Sri Lanka joined several

countries on Friday in co-sponsoring a UNGA resolution to allow Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to address its annual gathering of world leaders next week by video link after the United States refused to grant him a visa to travel to New York in person.

On the sidelines of the UNGA session, the President will also meet with several world leaders, while the Foreign Minister will hold talks with his counterparts from several other countries and meet with representatives of several organisations.

They will also attend a banquet to be hosted by US President Donald Trump for world leaders gathered in New York for the UNGA session. President Dissanayake will also meet with members of the Sri Lankan community there.

The President will head to Japan from New York on September 27, first to Osaka, where he will attend Expo 2025. He will attend Sri Lanka Day at the Expo, where the country’s unique offerings in culture, tourism, trade, and investment are on display.

This will be followed by the start of a state visit to Japan on September 28. He will hold talks with the Japanese Prime Minister and call on Japanese Emperor Naruhito.

The two countries will sign two memoranda of understanding, one to strengthen the capacity of the Sri Lanka Navy with equipment with a 500 million yen grant and the other to strengthen Sri Lanka’s daily industry with a 464 million yen grant, Minister Herath said.

Hans Wijayasuriya, Presidential Advisor on Digital Economy, and Duminda Hulangamuwa, Senior Economic Advisor to the President, will join the Sri Lankan delegation and take part in discussions on Japanese investments in the technology, communication and IT sectors.

President Dissanayake will return to country on September 30.
