Finance Ministry to order fleet of new double cabs
View(s):The Finance Ministry has started collecting information from Ministry Secretaries, Chief Secretaries of Provincial Councils and Heads of Department in the run-up to ordering a fleet of new double cabs to facilitate the “swift and efficient” implementation of the government’s development programmes.
However, the proposed double cabs should not be used as official vehicles for officers, and no fuel allowance should be paid based on them, a circular from Treasury Secretary Harshana Suriyapperuma says.
The circular points out that it is necessary to promptly address and resolve issues in sectors such as agriculture, irrigation, land, wildlife, forest conservation, and regional administration.
“The lack of a sufficient number of vehicles and machinery, along with the high maintenance costs for many old ones, has been a hindrance to continuous development work,” it states.
“Cabinet approval has been granted for the urgent purchase of a number of essential vehicles and machinery for state institutions, and the government has decided to first purchase a certain number of double cabs from the total vehicle requirement for the year 2025,” it said.
Officials have been instructed to submit their double cab requirements before the end of this month.
Requests must be reviewed by a committee chaired by the respective Ministry Secretary based on criteria such as reasons for the need for the vehicles; the institution’s vehicle needs and current vehicle fleet; the lifespan or condition of the vehicles to be replaced; maintenance costs for the existing vehicles over the last three years, etc.
