What is Prefect Camp?

Prefect Camp is a specialised leadership program designed to equip prefects with the skills, values, and teamwork essential for their role. Through interactive activities, discussions, and various challenges, prefects learn leadership, cooperation, and coordination while building strong bonds with their fellow prefects.

Royal Institute International School has always emphasised holistic education by fostering leadership qualities among students. Through initiatives like Prefect Camp, Royal Institute ensures that its prefects are not only academically competent but also capable of guiding, inspiring, and serving their peers with integrity and confidence.

Stepping Out, Standing Strong

Day 1 began at the CIMSTA Training Centre with the prefects paying homage to the school and motherland. A total of 118 students participated in the event. Afterwards, Mr. Thilina Dayarathna, the lead trainer, briefed everyone on the two-day schedule. He highlighted essential prefect values and abilities, including the importance of staying calm and composed as a mediator, listening attentively, proper communication, critical thinking, and integrity.

Next, the prefects proceeded to the grounds, where they were divided into five teams that would compete throughout the camp. Each team was tasked with creating a name, logo, haka, and team stripes. The teams were named the Blue Fangs, the Kaha Paniyos, the Pink Troopers, the Lab-rats, and the Blazing Reds.

The first activity, Pass the Ball, emphasised coordination and trust, while the second, Water Relay, highlighted precision, patience, and seamless teamwork. The third, Leaky Pipe Challenge, reinforced problem-solving, communication, and collaboration. The fourth activity, Blindfold Token Hunt, focused on clear guidance, trust, and effective communication, and the fifth, Form the Number, strengthened teamwork, quick thinking, and adaptability, all essential qualities for effective leadership.

At the end of each game, teams were awarded points based on their performance. Day 1 mainly served as an icebreaker, ending with a debrief in the main hall where teams that demonstrated integrity and other strong qualities were recognised and commended.

The Test of True Leadership

Day 2 began early, with prefects waking up at six o’clock and teams gathered for fitness training, including running, stretching, breathing, and other exercises.

The sixth activity tasked each team with forming the longest possible line, emphasising teamwork and creativity. Afterwards, teams went on a trek across the camp grounds.

The seventh challenge was an obstacle course featuring a tyre path, balancing beams, and a five-foot wall. This tested teamwork, coordination, and integrity, as prefects were encouraged to help each other complete the course.

The final game involved retrieving hidden team flags. A blindfolded member was guided by another teammate to the flag’s location while avoiding injury, as penalties were given for mistakes. The remaining members were responsible for finding the flag and relaying its location. Once retrieved, the flag was carried back to the site where homage had been paid on Day 1.

Lessons that Last Beyond Camp

Day 2 concluded with a final debrief in the main hall, where everyone reflected on the lessons learned over the two days. The winning team was announced, and team leaders delivered a vote of thanks to Mr. Thilina, Mr. Thilina Dayaratne, the Head of ViStar EMS, Mr. Suraj Hewarachchige, the Vice Principal of Royal Institute International School, Nugegoda, and the prefect teachers-in-charge who had accompanied them. At the closing ceremony, a participation certificate was awarded to all prefects who attended, marking their achievement and commitment.

Throughout Prefect Camp, prefects learned how to lead, coordinate, cooperate, and communicate as a unified team. The camp not only instilled the values and qualities expected of a prefect but also reflected the commitment of Royal Institute International School to nurture students who are capable leaders. By encouraging responsibility, discipline, and teamwork, RIIS ensures its students step into leadership roles with confidence and purpose, qualities that define the true spirit of a prefect.
