Commonwealth scholarships available for postgraduate studies

The Ministry of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education has notified that applications have been called for the awarding of postgraduate scholarships – masters, and PhD degree programmes – under the UK commonwealth scholarship programmes.

The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) has only requested 9 master’s nominations and 6 PhD nominations.

These scholarships are offered under 6 development themes. All candidates must apply under one of these themes. (For more information: https://cscuk.fcdo.gov.uk/csc-development-themes/)

The themes are Science and technology for development, Improving population health, Health system and capacity, Promoting innovation and entrepreneurship, Strengthening peace, security and governance, Strengthening resilience and response to crises, Access, inclusion and opportunity.

According to the notice published on the ministry website, candidates must apply using the CSC online application system, which could be accessed via their website https://cscuk.fcdo.gov.uk/about-us/scholarship/

Applicants should be citizens of Sri Lanka, should be in good health and prepared to live in the UK during the period of study.

Master’s applicants should possess a 4-year (minimum duration) Bachelor’s Degree (SLQF 6) with a First or Second Class Upper Division in the relevant field of study from a university recognised by the UGC in Sri Lanka.

PhD applicants should possess a 4-year (minimum duration) Bachelor’s Degree (SLQF 6) with a First or Second Class Upper Division in the relevant field of study from a university recognised by the UGC.

They also should possess a master’s degree (SLQF 9, 10, 11) in the relevant field of study from a recognised university, should not be registered for a PhD, or an MPhil leading to a PhD at a UK University or Sri Lanka before September/October 2026.

They should also provide a supporting statement from a proposed supervisor in the UK from at least one of the institutions named in the application form.

Applicants must apply directly through the CSC online application portal using the relevant portal.

The CSC application portal remains open from September 2 to October 14.
