Budget proposals for education sector approved by Finance Ministry
View(s):The overall budget for the Ministry of Education for 2026 has been estimated at Rs 300 billion, while for Higher Education it has been estimated at Rs 120 billion.
The necessary allocations have been approved by the Ministry of Finance, a senior official of the ministry said.
At a meeting held with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who is also the Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, on Friday, it was decided that the necessary allocations would be made for vital improvements to infrastructure in the education sector.
In the higher education sector, the allocations will cover new hostel facilities, rehabilitation of existing ones, and to implement education reforms. Funds will also be allocated to construct new buildings for several universities, as well as laboratory facilities for those with medical faculties.
The allocations will cover the digitalisation drive with better equipment from higher education institutions.
Allocations will be made to rehabilitate existing buildings which have not been renovated in over five years, and for construction of new buildings where necessary. (DW)
