Excess development officers recruited in 2022: Audit report
View(s):The Education Ministry has not assigned more than 1,000 excess development officers recruited in 2022 in a manner that would avoid excess staffing, the National Audit Office (NAO) has observed. Consequently, salaries and allowances paid to those officers were rendered ineffective, it said.
The NAO made the observation in its 2024 Annual Performance Report of the Education Ministry. It noted that according to the cadre information of national schools, the approved number of development officers for Grades 1, 2 and 3 is 1,297. However, as of December 31, 2024, the actual staff count was 2,313, indicating an excess of 1,016 personnel. In total, 1,068 officers were excessively assigned by the ministry.
While development officers had been recruited in excess, there were 178 vacancies among 258 approved posts of hostel wardens at national schools. Only 80 hostel warden positions were filled. The NAO observed that the ministry did not pay sufficient attention to this significant shortage of personnel responsible for managing and supervising students in school hostels. (SJ)
