NCAI drives national AI strategy

The National Centre for AI (NCAI) will be soon established to execute the strategy, coordinating efforts across government, private sector, academia, and civil society, bolstered by a robust Monitoring, Evaluation, and Continuous Improvement framework to track progress and tackle challenges, as the recently released government AI strategy articulates.

Promoting AI literacy and enabling it on Sri Lankan citizens is crucial for building trust, incorporating AI into daily life, and leveraging AI for future resilience and prosperity, it says.

The vision is to speed up the responsible development and adoption of AI, aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to create a digitally empowered Sri Lanka that promotes innovation, inclusion, and sustainable growth.

To achieve this vision, a centrally managed AI strategy will be implemented, concentrating on rapid value creation in quick-win projects and sustained capability development by investing in skills, data, infrastructure, and research, officials said. The strategy is guided by seven core principles, with inclusivity, trustworthiness, human-centricity, and sustainability, confirming alignment with national goals while protecting citizen rights.

Key initial areas for enabling AI Strategy include developing a wide-ranging data strategy, arming individuals with necessary skills, investing in digital infrastructure, promoting needs-driven research and development, and raising public awareness about AI. “These efforts aim to strengthen AI capabilities and step up the broader digital transformation agenda,” an official said.

The strategy prioritises responsible public sector transformation and private sector AI encouragement. The public sector will lead by example in ethical AI use, while the private sector will be supported in enabling policies and collaborative platforms to foster AI-driven entrepreneurship and competitiveness.

To ensure safe and trustworthy AI, a Responsible AI Framework that balances innovation with necessary safeguards will be adopted, the official added. Public engagement will be emphasised to align AI initiatives with societal values.
