Island Market for small businesses

View(s):

Colombo’s Island Market continues to support numerous small home business ventures adversely affected by the pandemic and economic crisis. The Island Market not only serves as an event but stands as an initiative dedicated to empowering local entrepreneurs, small businesses, creators, and makers by providing them with a platform to showcase their products and connect with potential buyers, the organisers said in a media release.

Of particular note is the initiative’s focus on encouraging and empowering female home-based vendors, as well as extending support to those facing physical challenges, visual or hearing impairments, or other special needs. By creating an inclusive platform for participation, the Island Market acknowledges the limited opportunities available to these talented individuals and strives to bridge the gap.

From an earlier Market event.

Over the past couple of years, the Market has successfully supported numerous small home vendors and facilitated connections with larger retail chains such as ODEL, which has generously offered them store spaces at their malls. Several other small businesses continue to gain confidence from the market and expand to opening their own physical stores. Eg: Sticks & Co., Cafe Longdon, etc. Additionally, the Island Market has contributed to several charitable organisations, including but not limited to Swashakthi Foundation of Persons with Disability, Child Action Lanka (CAL), VOICE, Free to Flow, water relief projects and light a future.

The Island Market is collaborating with CAL to support them by creating awareness on the many charitable activities they do. CAL works across Sri Lanka to help children overcome challenges like poverty, lack of education, poor nutrition, and unsafe environments. CAL’s vision is a Sri Lanka where every child can learn, grow, and lead, regardless of their circumstances.

The next market is happening on Saturday, September 27 from 11am to 5.30pm at the Town hall outdoor car park space.
