A strike by postal workers is set to begin at 4 p.m. today (17), with unions warning that services could be severely disrupted islandwide from midnight onwards.

The Postal and Telecommunications Officers’ Union, together with the United Postal Trade Unions’ Front (UPTUF), say the strike will commence at the Colombo Central Mail Exchange and expand into a continuous islandwide work stoppage affecting postal and administrative offices.

The unions’ demands include the payment of overtime allowances for postal officers and opposition to the directive requiring officers in administrative and accounts offices to record attendance through fingerprint machines.   Postmaster General Ruwan Sathkumara assured the public that 3,354 sub-post offices will remain open, as their sub-postmasters will not join the trade union action. However, he also cautioned that delivery of letters and parcels could be delayed.

In anticipation of the strike, leave of all postal department staff has been cancelled with effect from tomorrow. Heads of departments have been officially informed of the directive in writing.

Postal unions said they would continue with the strike until their demands are addressed.
