The Moratuwa Municipal Council will revive an abandoned playground and reconstruct its pavilion, which was built at a cost of Rs. 19 million, newly elected Mayor Nishantha Fernando said.
He noted that the pavilion had been constructed even before the playground itself, and over time, drug addicts and thieves had stripped it of its roof, fittings, and other items—including the main iron gate. Named the ‘Jayagathpura Playground’, the facility was started during the Yahapalana government by the Urban Development Authority (UDA), following a proposal by then councillor Duminda Peiris. However, the UDA failed to complete the project.
Mayor Fernando told the Sunday Times that rather than dwelling on past wasteful expenditure, it was more productive to complete the project so that children could benefit from the playground.
He said Rs. 1 million had been allocated to finish the work and rebuild the pavilion, particularly the section that posed a danger to visitors.
The mayor added that he also hoped to construct a gym for local sportspeople, including members of the two sports clubs in the area.
