The funeral of former State Minister Lohan Ratwatte will be held today (17) at the family burial grounds in Nittawela, Kandy. His remains lie at his Mahaiyawa residence for the public to pay their final respects.

Mr Ratwatte passed away on Friday while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Colombo.

He is the son of late General Anuruddha Ratwatte who served as Deputy Minister of Defence under President Chandrika Kumaratunga.

Lohan Ratwatte was first elected to Parliament in 2010 and was appointed SLFP organiser for Pathadumbara 2012.

He was re-elected in 2015 and 2020, during which time he held several state portfolios. These included the State Minister of Roads Development, Prison Reforms and Rehabilitation, and Gems and Jewellery under the Gotabaya Rajapaksa administration. In 2024, he was entrusted with the portfolio of Plantation Industries and Mahaweli Development.

Ahead of the last presidential election, Mr Ratwatte aligned himself with former President Ranil Wickremesinghe. Following his defeat, Mr Ratwatte stepped away briefly from politics, choosing not to contest the 2024 general election, though he later returned to the SLPP and continued to remain active until his illness.
