Professor Janitha A. Liyanage Elected to the Executive Committee of the Federation of Asian Chemical Societies
View(s):In a proud moment for Sri Lanka, Prof. Janitha A. Liyanage, a distinguished chemist and an academic leader, has been elected as the South and West Asia Representative to the Executive Committee (EXCO) of the Federation of Asian Chemical Societies (FACS). The appointment was made through a vote among delegates at the General Assembly of FACS.
Prof. Liyanage, the President of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon 2024/2025, has had a long and impactful career in science and education. A Senior Professor at the University of Kelaniya, a former Vice-Chancellor of the Gampaha Wickramarachchi University of Indigenous Medicine, a former Vice Chairperson of the University Grants Commission (UGC), the General President of the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science 2020, she has also served as the Sri Lankan Ambassador to the Russian Federation. Her research in environmental and analytical chemistry has earned her national and international recognition and many awards including Presidential awards for Scientific Research. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK), a Chartered Chemist and a Chartered Scientist.
FACS, founded in 1979, is a regional body that brings together 28 chemical societies from across Asia. Its mission is to promote chemical sciences through collaboration, capacity-building, and professional networking. Major activities include organising the biennial Asian Chemical Congress (AsiaChem), supporting young scientists, and strengthening scientific research infrastructure in developing countries.
In this new role, Prof Liyanage will represent the interests of South and West Asian chemists at the highest level of the Federation. She aims to foster international collaborations, enhance opportunities for emerging scientists, and align regional research priorities with global sustainable development goals. She is committed to building stronger networks across Asia and advancing chemistry for the betterment of our societies. Her election not only highlights her personal achievements but also places Sri Lanka at the forefront of scientific leadership in the region.
