The Education Ministry has planned to continue with the recruitment of about 13,000 teachers to fill vacancies.

The move follows a court order which allows the recruitment scheme to proceed.

However, court proceedings regarding some 16,000 Development Officers who applied for teaching appointments are pending.

A senior Education Ministry official said they would be able to go ahead with recruitment of teachers while the case continues.

The teacher recruitment programme will help fill vacancies in all classes leading up to the GCE (A/L). The ministry expects some of the teachers to be recruited from Education Colleges and some graduates.

The Finance Ministry has approved the recruitment scheme.

The Education Ministry also hopes to implement a transfer scheme for teachers, which enables the ministry to transfer some 10,000 teachers.

The official said the ministry will be able to balance the shortage of teachers to some extent, as some schools are overstaffed.

He said, however, there is an overall shortage of 43,000 teachers in state schools.

Most teacher recruitment programmes planned by the former government were held up as they were challenged by various groups in courts.

As a result of the shortage of teachers some schools have been forced to close classes, including A/L classes. Some schools also face the threat of closure due to lack of staff.

Education sector trade unions point out that the failure to manage the available teachers by implementing a proper transfer scheme, too, has contributed to the lack of teachers in some schools, as other schools were over-staffed. (DWI)
