Answering a question on Wednesday in her capacity as Education Minister, she noted that a 30-member task force headed by the Secretary to the Prime Minister has already been appointed to drive the digital transformation of the country’s education sector.
The task force also includes the Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Ministry Secretary, Digital Economy Ministry Secretary, and representatives from other relevant multi-sector stakeholders.
The task force has been given the authority to connect with development partners, the private sector and representatives of civil society and work with them over the next three years.
The premier added the government has already taken some measures towards the digital transformation of general education through classroom solutions and promoting blended learning. A proposal to provide smartboards and other IT tools to 1,000 schools has already been approved by Cabinet. A total of 1,900 smartboards are to be distributed to 1,500 schools.
The government is also planning to set up a national information management system for education covering all institutions and levels in the education sector. Initial steps towards building such a system have already begun with technical assistance from the Sri Lanka Air Force. The government expects to provide internet facilities to all secondary schools by end 2026. A Rs 5,000 unlimited data package has also been introduced for schools.
Meanwhile, the government has introduced a digital teacher competency curriculum, while training programmes have also commenced to teach ICT skills to teachers who do not possess them. About 300 teachers have already benefited from this training programme, the PM said. (SJ)
