Pera promotes rainforest awareness aboard Podimenike
View(s):In celebration of World Rainforest Day 2025, the Centre for Environmental Sustainability (CES) of the University of Peradeniya rolled out a creative and eco-conscious awareness campaign – onboard the scenic Podimenike train.
In collaboration with Amaya Resorts and Spas and the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Affairs, Central Provincial Council (CPC), the initiative celebrated the island’s lush rainforest heritage in motion, the university said.
Led by energetic undergraduates from the Botanical and Environmental Science Societies of UoP, the event turned the train journey from Sarasaviuyana to Nanuoya into an immersive learning experience.
With coaches echoing with conversations in both Sinhala and English, the initiative targeted both local commuters and international travellers winding their way through the misty hill country. A highlight of the ride was a lively pop quiz competition, where eager participants tested their knowledge of native flora and fauna. Winners walked away with copies of ‘Soba’ magazine published by CPC, biodiversity-themed postcards, and reusable glass water bottles, underscoring the programme’s push for sustainable, plastic-free living.
As the train threaded its way through verdant valleys and misty peaks, passengers left not just with souvenirs in hand – but with a deeper appreciation of the green treasures just beyond the windows.
