CTU slams government’s inaction on private university teacher hiring

The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) charges that the government has not heeded requests they made regarding the recruitment of Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) degree holders from private universities as teachers by several provincial education ministries.

CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin pointed out that the B.Ed degree being offered by state-run universities is a specialised degree programme lasting four years. In contrast, many of those recruited from private universities by the provincial councils had completed their B.Ed degrees in a year or less, leading to serious questions arising regarding the quality of those degrees and the proficiency of the recruits, he claimed.

“A B.Ed degree holder from the national universities are recruited to a higher grade in the teacher service, specifically because they enter universities with a higher Z score and study the specialised degree for four years,” Mr Stalin said.

“But many of the graduates recruited to the teacher service by provincial education ministries from these private universities have passed out with a degree lasting a year or less. In some cases, at least half the duration of the programme had been conducted online. Some of these institutions don’t even have proper premises to conduct lectures.”

He said representatives of teachers’ unions were recently granted a meeting with Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya in her capacity as Education Minister to discuss the matter. “We asked that the Teachers Service Minute be amended to prevent such recruitments and to also conduct a thorough check of the qualifications of those recruited to the teacher service from these private institutions, and to dismiss those who don’t have the proper qualifications. However, nothing has been done so far,” the CTU General Secretary said. He charged that the government’s inaction could pave the way for lasting damage to be done to the education of students by placing them in the hands of those unqualified to teach. (SJ)
