China, Sri Lanka ink USD20mn deal to digitalise education
View(s):China and Sri Lanka signed an agreement on Wednesday (25) to implement a USD20 million project to digitalise the country’s general education sector. The signing took place at the Education Ministry.
As part of the project, China will fund the supply of equipment to 500 schools and the establishment of a model smart classroom. The proposal was recently approved by the Cabinet.
Additionally, the project includes setting up a Network Operations Management Unit, Programme Operations Room, and Conference Room at the Education Ministry in Isurupaya.
The agreement is expected to directly support Sri Lanka’s comprehensive education reform process, scheduled to begin in 2026.
Among those present at the signing ceremony were Zhang Guanbin, Director General of the International Economic Cooperation Organisation of China’s Ministry of Commerce; Hao Jinping, Deputy Head of Department; Don Yixuan, Project Officer; officials from the Chinese Embassy in Colombo; Madura Seneviratne, Deputy Minister of Education and Higher Education; Nalaka Kaluwewa, Secretary to the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education; and other senior officials.
The project, initiated during the former government, was expedited following President Anura Dissanayake’s visit to China in January this year. (Tw/DW)
