Two ex-ministers indicted on charges of misappropriating Rs. 39 mn Sathosa funds

The Attorney General has indicted three accused including two former ministers on charges of misappropriating over Rs. 39 million in funds belonging to Lanka Sathosa.
The funds had been used to purchase carrom and checkers boards, which had then been distributed for the presidential election campaign of then President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The accused who have been indicted are former Trade Minister Nalin Fernando, former Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage and former Secretary to the Ministry of Sports Major General (Retd) Nanda Mallawarachchi. They have been indicted on four counts of conspiracy, misappropriation and aiding and abetting under the Penal Code and Public Property Act.
According to the prosecution, Lanka Sathosa had purchased 28, 000 carrom and checkers boards for distribution during the presidential election campaign of then President Mahinda Rajapaksa in 2015. Lanka Sathosa had purchased the game boards claiming they were to be distributed among schools for the development of school sports.
First accused Nalin Fernando had been the Chairman of Lanka Sathosa at the time these game boards were purchased on December 18, 2014. Second accused Mahindananda Aluthgamage had been the Sports Minister at the time while third accused Nanda Mallawarachchi had given approval for the purchase.
The prosecution alleges that 14,000 carrom boards and 14,000 checkers boards purchased in this manner had been used for the presidential election campaign.
