The South-West monsoon is gradually establishing itself across Sri Lanka, bringing anticipated showers and thundershowers to the Western, Sabaragamuwa, North-Western, and Central provinces, alongside the Galle and Matara districts, the Department of Meteorology stated.

Rainfall drenched several parts of the country in Western, Northern and Central Provinces over the week.

The minimum temperature of 15.5 degrees Celsius on 23-05-2025 was reported from Nuwara-Eliya. The downpour began in the early morning and intensified throughout the day, triggering concerns about waterlogging and strong winds.

People residing in Kalutara, Hambantota, Puttalam and Kegalle experienced hardships due to heavy winds and lightning.

Rapidly descending gusts of wind can cause significant damages, and the Met Department has advised people to be cautious of lightning that can cause serious harm.

It is advised to seek shelter during thunderstorms, preferably away from windows and doors. It is also recommended avoid open areas and stay away from open fields, trees, and water bodies, and disconnect electrical devices. Using wired telephones and other electrical appliances during a thunderstorm should be avoided.

Caution should be exercised with vehicles, especially when driving during thunderstorms, as visibility can be reduced and standing water can be a hazard. Attention should be paid to fallen trees and power lines.

Meanwhile health officials are cautioning the public to stay alert as cases of dengue and chikungunya are increasing, driven by the current weather conditions.

The Met Department added that showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the Uva province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts during the evening or night.

Accordingly, fairly heavy rainfalls above 75mm are likely at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and in the Galle, Matara, Nuwara-Eliya and Kandy districts.

Fairly strong winds of about 30-40 kmph can be expected at times over the Western slopes of the central hills and in the Northern, North-central, North-western and Southern provinces and in the Trincomalee district, the Met Department warned.
