On the Side of Humanity: Sri Lanka Red Cross pays tribute to volunteers
View(s):Sri Lanka joined the global community in commemorating World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day on the theme “On the Side of Humanity,” honouring the legacy of Henry Dunant and the enduring spirit of humanitarian service.
At a national event in Colombo, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS) paid tribute to outstanding volunteers from all 25 districts, recognising their selfless efforts during disasters and emergencies. Branches islandwide also engaged youth through Red Cross Junior Circles, essay contests, and art competitions focused on humanitarian themes.
SLRCS President K Balakrishnan hailed volunteers as the organisation’s backbone, while Director General Dr Mahesh Gunasekara reaffirmed the SLRCS’s unwavering commitment to supporting vulnerable communities across the country.
John Entwistle of the IFRC noted the importance of upholding humanitarian principles in a divided world, while ICRC’s Severine Chappaz honoured frontline workers who risk their lives, and called for renewed global commitment to international humanitarian law.
This year’s commemoration also marks the 60th anniversary of the Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
