The United States and Britain have issued updated travel advisories, warning their citizens against visiting Sri Lanka due to the rising number of chikungunya cases in the country.

Britain’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office has included chikungunya as a “health risk” travellers would face in Sri Lanka.

The US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention warned people who are planning to travel to the Indian Ocean region to take enhanced precautions against chikungunya.

According to the CDC’s level 02 travel notice, there are outbreaks of chikungunya in Mauritius, Mayotte, Réunion, Somalia, and Sri Lanka.

They recommended vaccination for travellers who are visiting an area with a chikungunya outbreak as well as advised pregnant women to reconsider travel to the affected areas, particularly if they are close to delivery.

Health Ministry Secretary Dr. Anil Jasinghe said the ministry had declared one week for dengue control activities in the Western Province, from where the majority of the cases were reported. He also said the ministry would launch countrywide mosquito control programmes to combat the spread.
