Suspended Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon is to appear before the committee appointed to inquire into allegations of misconduct and gross abuse of power on Wednesday (28) to answer a charge sheet containing 22 charges against him.
Mr Tennakoon appeared before the committee last Monday accompanied by his lawyer T Weerawickrama, where he was handed the charge sheet.
Mr Tennakoon had asked the committee time to answer the charges, and was given until May 28 to do so.
The committee also briefed the suspended IGP regarding the evidence and documents that are to be presented against him, and Mr Tennakoon had agreed to evidence being presented in the form of sworn affidavits.
The committee also rejected a preliminary objection raised by Mr Tennakoon regarding the committee probing the allegations against him.
Further steps in the inquiry are to be taken once Mr Tennakoon answers the charge sheet against him.
The three-member committee appointed to probe the allegations against Mr Tennakoon is headed by Supreme Court Justice Preethi Padman Surasena, with other members being Court of Appeal Judge Neil Iddawela and Chairman of the National Police Commission Lalith Ekanayake.
