Sri Lanka upholds its search and rescue duty
View(s):Sri Lanka reaffirmed its responsibility for providing aeronautical and maritime search and rescue services within its designated Search and Rescue Region (SRR), in line with international conventions, at the National Aeronautical Search and Rescue Committee (NASC) meeting held this week.
The meeting, convened on May 21 at the Maganeguma-Mahamedura Complex in Battaramulla, was co-chaired by Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuiyacontha (Retd) and the Secretary to the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Aviation Services.
It brought together senior defence and aviation officials to review national readiness and coordination in fulfilling Sri Lanka’s obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation.
Sri Lanka’s SRR encompasses its territorial waters and adjacent high seas, with responsibilities including the coordination of communications, medical assistance, disaster alerts, and emergency aid to individuals in distress, regardless of nationality.
Established through Extraordinary Gazette No. 2347-02 in August 2023, the NASC is mandated to provide strategic leadership in implementing the country’s national search and rescue system and is required to meet at least once annually, whether or not an active operation is underway.
The meeting was attended by tri-forces commanders, the Director General of Civil Aviation, Chairman of Airport and Aviation Services, the Director General of the Disaster Management Centre, and senior Police and aviation officials.
