The SLIIT MathFest 2023 organised by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics (DMS) was successfully held on the 26th of August at the SLIIT auditorium, Malabe. The occasion was graced by the esteemed presence of Mr. Rajeeva Bandaranayike, Chief Executive Officer of the Colombo Stock Exchange, as the Chief Guest.

The MathFest held three core objectives: fostering analytical and logical thinking for solving mathematical problems, enhancing mathematical skills while promoting innovative team-based thinking, and granting students the invaluable opportunity to relish intellectual challenges presented by math problems and experience the excitement they entail.

The event welcomed students from 45 schools, including national, provincial, private, and international institutions from the Colombo Education Zone District, bringing a diverse array of minds to this educational fiesta. The Ministry of Education granted the necessary approval and offered support and cooperation to hold the competition. The first round of the competition was a computer-based exam with 25 multiple-choice questions and 1 hour duration. Six schools were selected for the second round. The second round was two essay-type questions for one hour.

St. Joseph College, Colombo 10, became the champion of the event. Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo 04, secured the 1st runner-up spot, with Issipathana College, Colombo 05, following as the 2nd runner-up. Their accomplishments were recognised with shields, cash prizes and tokens of appreciation from well-wishers. In addition, the winning school was given the MathFest Trophy from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

Acknowledging the collective spirit of mathematical exploration, all participants were awarded certificates.  Looking forward, the DMS envisions to include this event in the SLIIT annual calendar with plans to extend its reach to encompass more schools in Sri Lanka.
