Evaluating Sri Lanka’s Education System: A Conversation with a Professional Educationist

View(s):

1.   you have now become a professional educationist in the education field here. Have you ever thought of becoming such a person here in Sri Lanka?

Not really. I wanted to become an educationist to try and make a difference in young people’s lives and to hopefully inspire the same passion and interest in my subject that I have. In such a fast paced world, Modern Studies is a great subject to be able to explore newly occurring issues/topics further. But i have reached more even though i never thought i would.

2. I think you are a fine product of our education system. In that sense how can you blame our system?

Education system over Sri Lanka is almost in danger zone. Not only Education everything is like a pickle jar right now in Sri Lanka. Actually the real reason behind this is everyone needs a system change but no one wants to change individually.

The major reason that has contributed to the failure of  education in Sri Lanka has been the recruitment of untrained teachers We will never achieve  goals of education  through the recruitment of untrained teachers to the sector. As a primary and upper  primary teacher i have the complete understanding that primary education plays a major part in a person’s life.  if a child’s primary education fails due to any reason, his secondary education will be completely hampered.

“In a recent survey, it was revealed that the literacy of children studying in Grade Three has decreased compared to the children of previous years. These children were admitted to schools during the Covid-19 pandemic. Due to the pandemic, they missed education activities in Grades One and Two. This situation was intensified due to the economic crisis that followed. The lack of resources caused by the economic crisis aggravated this problem. Hopefully the government will work towards it.

Sri Lanka ranks poorly in terms of science and math education and internet access in schools. Sri Lanka’s efforts have been primarily concentrated on basic education (particularly secondary), with much less focus on higher levels of education, such as universities.

3.   What can you say about our
ancient edu system?

We should respect our country strategies Ancient edu system was same for everyone there wasn’t much differentiation among individual teaching. Anyway everyone had to work and cooperate  as the teacher said. Though there  were different kids there werent any different methodologies used.

4 .  Have our traditional values been an obstacle for the progress of
our edu system?

Not at all.,i  see that the current education system is moreover huge books our morals and ethics are shading.  Huge syllabus have made kids carry a huge  burden on their shoulders. They see Education as a trouble.

5 .  you have been working for some foreign countries through online right ? . did you see any difference between theirs and ours?

Yes. Sad to say there is a huge gap. Some countries focus on attitudes at the foundation classes where  parents here expect them to complete bundle of writing work. They learn to think out of the box in little age unfortunately our kids struggle they try to see what only others show them. Here kids are told about exam writing higher scores university ranks where there they teach education is not only books.

6.   what are your suggestions to be worked out in the edu system to ease  unrest of our unemployed youths.

Educational policies should be reformed due to Lack of strong directions in education system for meeting national socio economic challenges of 21st century, Curriculum and assessments should be reverse due to Excessive burden of learning. Serious gaps of relevance of education should highly taken In to notice.Quality and delivery development  management and Lagging staff and teacher redevelopment  Human  resource development and Implementation reforms should take place to minimize  inequities in resource availability

7.   what can you say about  the school  text books specially the books aimed at improving the English among the children in the primary classes?

Sorry to say, Not on standard . Should upgrade accordingly. Every single area of the language should be taken in to notice. Alpha is all-around the world and feels like we are lagging behind.

Nilu last question… what do you have to say about this most  prestigious award you have got as the first Asian lady educationist?

That was the turning point of my life.  The thirst of learning Exploring new things, competing has turned into a habit. The knowledge i gain is the most important thing ever.  truly blessed to get recognized in global platform.
