All teachers will be BA qualified from 2027: Edu Minister
View(s):All teachers will possess a Bachelor’s degree (BA) in Education from 2027, said Education Minister Susil Premajayantha.
He said plans are afoot to combine all 19 Colleges of Education and establish a single university named the Sri Lanka University of Education. The Minister said the concept paper has been drafted and will be submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers next week.
“During a recent visit to Russia, I noticed most school teachers are degree holders, and school principals possess PhDs in education. From 2024, teacher aspirants here will undergo three years of academic work at the University of Education and one year of practical training. They will be awarded a Bachelor’s degree from a university recognised by the University Grants Commission,” the Minister said.
Minister Premajayantha said Colleges of Education at present lack the latest technology such as smart boards and laptops.
“The establishment of the university will address this issue as well. How can we expect teachers to teach students technology, or the use of technological devices, when they don’t have the necessary training,” he questioned. -NF
