Fathima Hadiya, the widow of Easter Sunday terror attack mastermind Zahran Hashim, was granted bail by the Kalumai High court on Wedneday, after nearly four years in custody, abut she was released only on Friday after a battle by her legal team.

Kalmunai High Court Judge Jayaram Trotsky released the suspect on a cash bail of Rs. 25, 000 and two personal bails of Rs. 2.5 million each. The Court also imposed a travel ban on the suspect and those who served as her bondspeople.

Attorney-at-Law Rushdhie Habib appeared for the suspect.

Even though Ms. Hashim was given bail on Wednesday, she was not released until Friday. Prison authorities had taken her to the Colombo Chief Magistrate court and the Negombo Magistrate court to check if there were other cases pending against her.

Her lawyers have challenged the Prison authorities’ action.

She had been held in detention under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) since her arrest by the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) after being found injured but alive along with her daughter on April 27, 2019 after a massive explosion at their hideout in Sainthamaruthu.

They had survived the explosions and shootout that occurred between members of Zahran Hashim’s terrorist cell and security forces personnel in Sainthamaruthu. Among those who died was Ms. Hashim’s nine-year-old son.

She underwent extensive interrogation and was taken by authorities to many places associated with Zahran’s terrorist activities. She also gave a confidential statement before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court and testified at the Presidential Commission of Inquiry into the Easter Sunday attacks.

So far, the authorities have been unable to find direct links between Ms. Hashim, the Easter Sunday terror attacks and the conspiracy behind the terrible incident, her lawyers said.

She was held in custody for withholding information from the Police about Pulasthini Mahendran alias Sara Jasmin, one other suicide bomber’s wife, who was a maker or collector of explosives. The whereabouts of Ms. Jasmin is a mystery, with reports saying she has fled to India.
