With many people facing economic hardship, some have opted to become mobile vendors. One such group in Puttalam have resorted to selling cane and other handmade items on motor bikes.
The merchants said they engaged in the new method of selling as their primary livelihood since they have found a demand for home deliveries of such products.
They travel with over Rs 100,000 worth of handmade goods secured on their motorbikes to Chillaw, Nikawaratiya, Anamaduwa to sell them on the way. Among the goods sold are cane boxes, mats, coir floor mats, wooden pestle and mortar, wooden boxes as well as coconut shell spoons.
They added that there is a demand for goods fashioned by their wives and children, therefore, they have advised family members to make goods, while they travel far riding their motorbikes to sell the products.
The merchants explained that they have managed to secure a better income comparative to daily wage earned by other labour activities. As a result, they have decided to expand their range by spending several days at outstation areas.
