Saving paddy for a rainy day

Farmers have resorted to drying and storing paddy at their residences expecting to sell it at a later time when paddy prices are high.

As paddy cultivated during the Maha season is being harvested, paddy prices have gone down.

Farmers complained that a control price of Rs 100 per kilo of paddy is insufficient and is not enough to cover the expenditure incurred during cultivation. Since they are unable to earn a profit or cover cultivation expenditure, they had resorted to dry paddy by themselves and store portions or even the full harvest.

A farmer residing at Yaya Hatha in Rajanganaya used the Puttalam-Anuradhapura road side near Saliya wewa to dry paddy.
