St. Benedict’s College athletes covered themselves in glory at the annual Saints Quadrangular Athletic Meet, the flagship athletic event of the four leading catholic schools in Sri Lanka, namely St. Anthony’s College, Kandy, St. Benedict’s College, St. Joseph’s College and St. Peter’s College. The meet was held at St. Peter’s College grounds, the Peterites being hosts this year. The meet is always organised by a committee consisting of past athletes of the four schools.

The best athletes from each school battled it out in the field for honours and the Benedictines emerged overall champions of the meet with 556 points followed by the Peterites with 431, Josephians 197 and Antonians 171.

Benedictines won 25 gold, 21 silver and 21 bronze medals breaking 13 meet records in the process. The entire competition was well organised and conducted in true spirit of sportsmanship and healthy rivalry. When it came to special awards, Benedictines won virtually everything on offer for the present boys. They bagged the overall relay championship and age segment championships in the Under-14, Under-16, Under-18 and Under-20 missing out in Under-12 by a mere four points.

The Benedictines’ success in athletics is mainly due to the encouragement and support of Rev. Bro. Director (Dr) Pubudu Rajapaksha, Sports Coordinator Rev. Bro. Dilshan Vimukthi, total commitment, dedication and hard work of the MIC/Head Coach Nuwan Abeywickrema, Senior coaches Ravindra Weerakkody, Ravi Jayakody, Assistant Coach Minindu de Mel and Primary School Coach and Team Physio Marin Amerasinghe. The team is backed by the SBC Athletic Wing, who are supported by loyal Old Benedictines in Sri Lanka and overseas, presently mainly by Old Bens in Victoria and St. Benedict’s College Development Fund. The brilliant performances by the juvenile and junior athletes augur very well for the future of athletics at St. Benedict’s College.
