Though the ongoing Badminton Junior Nationals, part of the overall Junior and Senior Nationals, is clearly not the 38th edition, questions crowd whether is it the 50th edition, despite organisers having titled it as the 38th instalment.

The Sunday Times is in possession of documents, indicating the history of the tournament had originated in 1971. Hence this year, the tournament should be the 50th edition, a grand and a golden jubilee year, excluding the 2020 and 2021 editions due to the pandemic.

When contacted the Secretary of Sri Lanka Schools Badminton Association, Malika Waduge did admit a fault has fallen, however, failed to conclusively rule whether it is the 50th occasion.

“Yes, there is a mistake. But I cannot say for sure whether it is the 50th instalment this time. Though it had started all the way in 1971, I still have to reflect, research and rectify only once the tournament is over,” she said of the competition, which concludes today at the Sugathadasa Indoor Complex.
