Sri Lanka will import 50,000 tons of rice from Bangladesh on a government to government basis, in a bid to ensure food security.

The Cabinet approved the purchase of the rice stock to meet the anticipated demand during the forthcoming festive season, when the rice would be sold at an affordable price to consumers, through Lanka Sathosa Ltd.

Earlier, Bangladesh Food Minister Mohammad Karmul Islam said they finalised the deal at US$ 450 per tonne, inclusive of cost, freight and insurance.

This year Sri Lanka experienced a severe drought in many parts of the country, resulting in significant losses to the rice harvest too.
