Hewage Ariyaratne, 52, and a father of two, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, fell to his death from the 40-foot high balcony of a house in Wattala, police said.

The victim had been asleep on the balcony at the time of the incident.

He had been employed to repair a vehicle and was later invited for a drink by the vehicle owner, on that fateful night.

Mr Ariyaratne had eventually fallen asleep by the side of a flight of stairs on the second floor of the house.

“We had two bottles of Arrack that night and went to sleep. The victim slept on the second floor near the staircase. Around 2 am we heard a loud shout and went out to investigate, when we discovered his body on the ground.

We immediately rushed him to a hospital in a van, and he was admitted to the ICU. He later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital,” the employer said.

Hewage Ariyaratne was a resident of Webada, Kadawatha. The National Hospital’s JMO confirmed that death was due to damage caused to the skull as a result of a fall. Inquirer into Sudden Death, Ashroof Rumi affirmed the JMO’s findings, and allowed the burial of the deceased.3
