SC opinion: Parliament to get full text
View(s):Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa said yesterday that he would make available to Parliament the full text of the opinion of the Supreme Court on the eligibility of President Mahinda Rajapaksa to seek re-election for a third term. The Speaker said he would make the copy of the Supreme Court opinion available to Parliament when he received it.
He made this comment after Opposition Chief Whip John Amaratunga, for the second time this week, demanded that the full text of the SC opinion be made available to Parliament.
On Tuesday, Leader of the House and Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva announced in Parliament that the Supreme Court had given a unanimous opinion that there was not impediment to President Rajapaksa contesting for a third term. However, the full text of the opinion given by a full bench of the SC has not been made public so far.
