Kingswood triumphs over St.Peter’s in scrappy game

It was Kingswood almost all the way as they attacked in short, sharp bursts to heap misery on a dispirited and a disjointed Peterite side and, in the process, registered a crushing 41 points (3 goals, 4 tries) to 15 (1 goal, 1 try, 1 penalty) win at Bogambara yesterday.
It defied belief that, earlier in the season, the Peterites was spoken of as possible champions. They did try hard on occasion, but their moves were not coordinated and their passing beggared belief. The ball was flung back any-old-way in the hope that someone would latch on. Skipper Ishan Weerakkody moved to the scrum half’s position mid-way to take the place of the injured scrum half and this seemed to take the sting out of their attacks.

The Peterites took an early lead through a Dilanka Perera try. But the lead was short lived as J.N. Perera equaled for the hosts.
Penalised for going over the top, Kingswood saw the lead change hands. They too had a fairly easy penalty coming their way when the Peterite line was off side. But it wasn’t made use of. However, Malith Priyankara darted over for a try which A.R. Wijesinghe converted. Another try by Thavindu Chaturanga, though unconverted, put the home team ahead at 24-8. Dilanka Perera’s second try, goaled by Canute, saw the lead whittled down as the half-time score read 24-15.

Kusal Perera’s solo effort covering over fifty yards was the piece de resistance of the Kingswood effort.
Leading by the ‘proverbial mile’, Kingswood’s defence was up to the task of defying some last ditch efforts at going over by the Peterites.

Kingswood’s win, their second, is obviously a source of joy. But if the truth is to be told, the game was scrappy and devoid of much exhilaration. Referee D. Nimal used the whistle very liberally and this, too, helped to hinder the smooth passage of play.
