Matale ‘Golds’, Maroons, Colombo ‘Reds’ and Kandy Blues into semi finals

Matale ‘Golds’, Maroons, Colombo ‘Reds ‘ and Kandy ‘Blues’ made their way into the semi-finals of the boys segment of the Under 19 Schools Hockey Nationals conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Hockey Association at the Astro turf yesterday.
In the first quarter final, Matale ‘Golds’ beat Kandy ‘Whites’ 5-0. While N.K. Villawaarachchi scored two, Mohamed Ibras, M. Woodward and C. Chandarasekera scored one each.

In the second quarter final, Wennappuwa conceded a walkover to Matale ‘Maroons’ when they did not report for the match.
In the third quarter final, a goal each by Mohamed Nihad and Imam Muzammil gave Colombo ‘Reds’ a 2-0 win over Gampaha.
In the fourth quarter-final, Kandy ‘Blues’ beat Colombo ‘Blues’ 7-6 in the single series, after the game ended in a nil all draw and the penalty shoot out also ended in a deadlock score of three all.

In the semi finals to be played today at the same venue, Matale ‘Golds’ will meet Matale ‘Maroons, while Colombo ‘Red’s will take on Kandy ‘Blues’ in the second semi-final.

In the girls preliminary round matches, two goals each by Sandaruwani Jayaratne and Navanjana Ekanayake enabled Matale to defeat Badulla 4-0, while a single goal by Heshani Jayalath of Colombo ‘Blues’ inflicted a 1-0 defeat on Badulla.

In the girls semi-finals to be played today, Matale will meet Kandy ‘Whites’ and Colombo ‘Red’s will oppose Kandy ‘Blues’. (BM)
