Trade unions affiliated to political parties of the governing UPFA – Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP), Ceylon Communist Party (CP) and Nava Sama Samaja Party (NSSP) – are joining hands with 46 other public sector trade unions in demanding a pay hike.

The unions have put forward three main demands – an increase of Rs.10,000 in the basic salary, the settlement of salary anomalies and an increase in the cost of living allowance of Rs. 280 per unit.

Health Services Trade Union Alliance President Saman Ratnapriya emphasised that trade unions affiliated to the main political parties had joined hands to form a common front when presenting their demands.
Among the 46 unions involved in the alliance are the Ceylon Bank Employees Union, Ceylon Teachers Union and Ceylon Estate Staffs Union.

He added the unions had handed over a letter to the President raising these issues. However, as the unions had received no response to the letter, they held a protest march on November 7 to highlight their problems. Mr. Ratnapriya said the unions were also not satisfied with budgetary allocations and at discussions held among the trade unions last Thursday it was decided to give the Government two months to settle TU grievances.

Mr. Ratnapriya added that in the event of the Government not meeting their demands, the unions would resort to massive trade union action.
