Speaker warns MPs: Abide by Standing Orders or face removal

Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa yesterday warned MPs to abide by Standing Orders of Parliament, or face removal from the House.

“If MPs stand up unnecessarily, under the pretext of raising a Point of Order, I will have them removed,” the Speaker said, angered by the actions of UPFA MP A.H.M. Azwar and UNP MP Sujeewa Senasinghe.
The warning came during the debate on the votes of the Ministry of Economic Development, when National List UPFA MP Azwar interrupted UNP MP Ravi Karunanayaka, while MP Senasinghe interrupted Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara.

If an MP wishes to be heard, when another MP is on his feet, he needs to raise a Point of Order and refer to the particular Standing Order under which he is interrupting the speaker. However, most times, MPs use this to make comments which usually get expunged from the Hansard, as they are not authorised.

On Friday, Speaker Rajapaksa requested MPs to maintain the decorum of the House by respecting Parliamentary traditions such as standing when the Mace is being carried into the Chamber at the start of the day’s session, and taken out when proceedings end.

This was after several MPs were seen standing outside their allocated seats and talking, when the Mace was being taken out of the Chamber by the Sergeant-at-Arms.
