At least four persons have died and some 271 families affected in overnight rains on Friday that caused flooding in certain areas of the country, a senior official with the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said today.

Three persons were drowned after they were swept away in swirling flood waters at Neluwa in the Galle District shortly before dusk on Friday while another person was killed on the spot in Dambulla after being hit by a bolt of lightning, DMC Additional General Manager Pradeep Kodippilli said.

He said the families affected by the bad weather were from Lunugamvehera and Tangalle in the Hambantota District and from the Moneragala District.

They are currently being housed at welfare centres and provided with food and other essential items, Mr. Kodippilli said.

He added that the Navy had also been alerted to be on standby should their services be required.
